Anishka Jannu Week #11 - Power of Communication

Language and communication are an essential part of our daily life. For example, we communicate with our peers and family almost every day. Communication may take place digitally or in real life. Wherever it occurs, communication is crucial to ensure that everything runs smoothly.

A major issue that many people face is the lack of clear communication. When people speak inaccurately and convey incorrect information, it creates many mistakes and misunderstandings. This creates unnecessary chaos that could have easily been prevented. This is why activities such as Speech and Debate and Public Speaking are extremely important to be involved in. When people develop good communication and speaking skills, they can help ensure that there are less mistakes in the future.

Another way to prevent these errors is to be clear and concise when distributing information. When leaders and administrators send out emails and messages, they should make sure that they are providing accurate information with correct links and details.

Communicating is also important for maintaining good connections and relationships with others. It allows the other person to understand the situation and empathize. Moreover, good speaking skills can create a good rapport with managers and advisors. These bonds allow people to advance and be promoted faster than usual because their leaders have more trust in them.

An article on the power of communicating states that “‘The #1 criteria for advancement …is an ability to communicate effectively’” (Story). This quote emphasizes the importance of communication. Although people may have the necessary skills and capabilities to complete tasks, no one will be aware of these abilities without accountability. Therefore, publicizing one's contributions and achievements is important for success. Communication demonstrates the difference between a skilled person and a capable person who communicates their work effectively.

Everyone should take time to practice good public speaking skills in their life. From the paycheck to family, communication and accountability are crucial for success.

  1. Hey Anishka,
I really liked your topic because I feel like it's something everyone can relate to. I'm sure we've all, at one time or another, said something that got lost in translation and led to tensions with someone you care about. I agree that communication is a really powerful thing. With others and with yourself. Yes, communication is important to developing meaningful relationships, but I also think it's important to have a network of communication with yourself. Sometime we all need to ask ourselves what we need and what we want in order to be healthier. I feel like level of communication is often overlooked because when we think of communication we think of conversations with another person.

  2. Hi Anishka, your topic about the importance of communication is very interesting and can be seen throughout many aspects of life. An example of where miscommunication leads to negative consequences is in the book Everything I Never Told You, where the inability to confront each other about an issue leads to a split in the family dynamic. When James is unable to explain why he wants a closed casket funeral, it creates distraught amongst everyone as Marilyn is now angry that she is unable to see her daughter for the last time, but James knows that she would not want to see her daughter in the state that she is in from the autopsy. Another instance where their miscommunication leads to separation is when James does not want to become a Doctor's assistant for Marilyn as he remembers the scars on his moms hands and he does not want Marilyn to experience the same things. Communication is key for anyone to live and it is important to keep a good dynamic in families.

  3. Hi Anishka,
Your investigation on the value of communication is quite interesting, Communication affects many aspects of many people's lives. You allusion to Everything I never Told You demonstrates how communication plays a important live and without the glue of communications, it can cause breakdowns within families. Unresolved communications can lead to misunderstandings and toxicity seen by James and Marylin. The closed casket at the burial can show as a illustration of the consequences and trying to keep information hidden. I feel like tying this unit with Everything I Never Told You, has been a reflection of truly how powerful communication is.
